Every July, snowmelt gives way to one of the largest alpine wildflower displays in North America. Mountain passes, open meadows, lakes, and forests become covered in colorful blooms while dramatic peaks provide an incredible backdrop.

Unlike many popular Colorado destinations, Crested Butte still feels peaceful and intimate. It’s easy to find quiet locations where you can simply enjoy being together without crowds surrounding you.

Whether you’re planning an adventurous mountain session or a slow evening picnic surrounded by flowers, Crested Butte offers endless possibilities.

When is Wildflower Season in Crested Butte?

Timing is everything.

The peak wildflower season typically falls between early July and late July, although every year varies depending on snowfall and spring temperatures.

Generally:

• Late June: Early blooms begin appearing.
• Early to Mid July: Wildflowers become more abundant.
• Mid to Late July: Peak bloom across many trails and mountain meadows.
• Early August: Some higher elevation areas still have beautiful flowers.

If wildflowers are your priority, I always recommend scheduling your engagement session during the middle of July whenever possible.

This session took place at the end of June and we had gorgeous blooms.

 

Leave No Trace Matters

One of the reasons Crested Butte remains so beautiful is because visitors work together to protect it.

Wildflowers are delicate, and many alpine ecosystems take years to recover from damage.

• Stay on established trails whenever possible.
• Avoid stepping into fragile flower fields.

• Leave every location exactly as we found it.

Brooke shares, “Cody and I first met while I was bartending at a local restaurant. At the time, I was in college studying Wildlife Biology, and Cody was working at a local fish hatchery. We always enjoyed talking about biology and wildlife since we shared so many of the same interests. From Cody’s perspective, our meeting wasn’t anything out of the ordinary, but he knew pretty early on that I was someone he could see himself with. Since I was busy with school, he patiently waited for the right opportunity. About a year later, I joined a dating app, came across his profile, and immediately thought, I know him! Cody messaged me saying something like, “This is my lucky day,” and asked me out. I figured we’d have plenty to talk about at the very least and, thankfully, I said yes.

Our first date was in Crested Butte, Colorado. Cody took me out for drinks, dinner, and then to see the new Dune movie. I love going to the movies, so I was already excited.

From the moment we met up, everything just felt easy. I’d never felt so comfortable on a first date, and we spent the entire evening laughing together, even during the movie. Cody says he’s surprised we didn’t get kicked out of the sold-out theater because we were having so much fun. Driving home that night, we both knew it had been one of the best first dates we’d ever experienced. We’ve been laughing together ever since.

The proposal was very special. Brooke shares, “We had planned a Valentine’s trip to Santa Fe, New Mexico, a trip we’d talked about taking for quite some time. During the planning, Cody suggested we go on a hot air balloon ride, which had always been on my bucket list. What I didn’t know was that Cody had been waiting for the perfect moment to propose. Friends kept telling me they thought it was going to happen, but I honestly didn’t believe any of them, which worked out perfectly for him.

Right before we boarded the balloon, Cody got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. He figured proposing on the ground was probably a better idea than risking dropping the ring somewhere over New Mexico!

It was the most incredible surprise. Afterward, we floated over the beautiful landscape, spotted birds soaring below us, and soaked in every second of being newly engaged. It remains one of the most unforgettable days of our lives.”

 

Brooke continues, “We were fortunate enough to have our engagement photoshoot in Crested Butte, where we had our very first date. We really loved that the mountains got to be part of our story because they represent so much of who we are. Colorado has become home to us, and some of our favorite memories together have been spent hiking, camping, fishing, birdwatching, and simply exploring the outdoors.

We are getting married at Waunita Hot Springs on August 14, 2027. We’re planning a relaxed mountain wedding with a Western feel. We want the day to reflect our love for Colorado and the outdoors, gathering the people we love together in one beautiful place.

I asked them what they love most about each other. Brooke shares, “Cody is truly my best friend. I love his laugh, his kindness, and how deeply he cares for everyone and everything around him. He’s the person I want to share every adventure with. Life has been more fun with him by my side and I’m excited to be able to spend all the ups and downs of life together. There’s something really special about finding someone you can be completely yourself around, and that’s exactly what Cody is for me.” 

Cody shares, “The thing I love most about Brooke is the care she puts into every part of our relationship and the love she shows me every single day. I admire how she’s always willing to chase new adventures and pursue our passions together. Before Brooke, I never truly understood what it meant to have a true partner. She’s not only everything I could have hoped for in a wife, but also my best friend. I can honestly picture spending every day of the rest of my life with her and not wanting to change a thing. Even on the hard days, she makes life better. She still makes me smile, laugh, and blush, and I feel incredibly lucky that I get to marry her.

Best Easy to Access Wildflower Locations in Crested Butte

One of the best parts about planning a wildflower engagement session in Crested Butte is that you don’t have to complete a strenuous hike to find incredible scenery. Some of the area’s most beautiful alpine meadows are just a short walk from the trailhead, making them perfect for couples who want stunning views without spending hours hiking.

Here are a few of my favorite locations that offer breathtaking wildflowers with relatively easy access.

Lower Loop Trail

If you’re looking for colorful wildflowers with mountain views and easy walking, Lower Loop is one of the best choices. Located just outside downtown Crested Butte, this trail winds through open meadows filled with seasonal blooms while offering views of Mount Crested Butte in the distance.

Because it’s close to town, it’s a wonderful option for couples who want a relaxed session or are visiting for a weekend getaway.

Hike Difficulty: Easy
Walking Distance: Less than 2 miles, with plenty of beautiful spots close to the trailhead.

Snodgrass Mountain Trail

Snodgrass Mountain is a local favorite for good reason. During peak wildflower season, the lower portions of the trail are lined with vibrant lupine, Indian paintbrush, and mule’s ear sunflowers. The expansive mountain views create a classic Colorado backdrop while the gently climbing trail makes it accessible for most couples.

We don’t need to hike all the way to the summit to find gorgeous scenery. Some of the prettiest meadows are found much earlier along the trail.

Hike Difficulty: Easy to Moderate
Walking Distance: Around 1–2 miles for beautiful photo locations.

Washington Gulch Road

Not every stunning location requires a trail. Washington Gulch Road offers numerous roadside pull-offs where colorful wildflower meadows stretch toward dramatic mountain peaks. Depending on the bloom, we can often find breathtaking scenery after only a short walk from the car.

This is one of my favorite areas for couples who want incredible views while minimizing hiking.

Hike Difficulty: Very Easy
Walking Distance: Just a few minutes from parking.

Kebler Pass

Famous for its golden aspens in the fall, Kebler Pass is equally breathtaking during wildflower season. The drive itself is incredibly scenic, and several pull-offs and meadows offer easy access to colorful blooms, open fields, and panoramic mountain views.

Because there are so many beautiful locations along the pass, it’s easy to create a session that feels adventurous without requiring long hikes.

Hike Difficulty: Easy
Walking Distance: Typically under half a mile.
