Winter in Colorado is sometimes freezing, sometimes nice and always beautiful! Many couple’s get engaged in winter, during the holidays or around Valentine’s Day and can’t wait tot celebrate. Or couples want to take engagement photos to have for their save the dates during these colder months because they need to send them out to inform their guests of their upcoming wedding.

Here are some tips to help you make the most of this time of year.

Wardobe is important. You may want to wear coats or be bundled up for some of your session, but if you are able to handle the chill, I recommend also planning some photos with your coats off. Bringing a blanket for some seated photos and to wrap around you can also be a nice addition.

Bring boots! If there has been snow some areas can get very muddy. Some parks even get shut down because of mud! You can always walk around in your boots and then change your shoes if you wish, when we get to the best photo spots. Hand warmers can be helpful to bring, as well. It’s also a good idea to bring a thermos of hot tea of coffee to warm you up during a wardrobe change or at the end of your shoot.

Evergreens and red rocks: Most trees are bear and nothing is in bloom during the winter, but we have some gorgeous evergreens throughout most parks that add nice color and Colorado flair! Red rocks can also add some nice color to your photos no matter which season you choose.

Stay warm: Consider wearing long underwear, bringing a thermos of hot coffee or tea to warm your hands and a big coat or blanket to keep you warm before we start shooting. We can also plan a break in the middle to the shoot to warm up in your car if it is extremely cold.

Embrace the snow: You could wear your mittens, hats and snow gear and lean into the snowy vibes!

If you were hoping for a summer feel with more in bloom, check out the Denver Botanic Gardens. They have a green house and tropical conservatory that is warm and blooming year round.

Or try for an indoor shoot. I always recommend an outdoor shoot, but if you can’t stand the cold and need to get your photos done soon we have a few options: we can find an indoor location that will allow photography, book a studio, or use a hotel or airbnb.

I will ask you to choose a preferred date and a back up date, just in case the weather is not in our favor. We can reschedule your shoot as long as you let me know 24 hours in advance–no problem at all.
